Wix Velo is the full-stack development platform built into Wix. It lets developers add custom JavaScript, server-side functions, custom databases, dynamic page routing, and connections to external APIs, all inside the Wix environment. In practice it turns Wix from a website builder into a platform you can build real applications on, such as member portals, booking engines, dashboards, and marketplaces.

You reach for Velo when standard Wix features and apps cannot do what you need, like custom business logic, data-driven pages, or an integration with a system Wix does not support out of the box. It is not needed for a standard marketing site, where built-in features are usually enough, and we will say so rather than over-engineer. One honest note for 2026: Wix is gradually moving from Velo APIs to its newer JavaScript SDK, while existing Velo APIs continue to work unchanged, so current Velo sites keep running.

Custom code does need someone who understands it for changes and fixes, unlike pure drag-and-drop edits. We document how the code is structured and can provide ongoing support, or hand it to your developer cleanly. Routine content edits can still be made in the standard editor without touching code.

Will Velo slow my Wix site down?

Well-written Velo code does not inherently slow a site, but heavy server-side calls or large data operations can affect speed if built carelessly. We design data access and functions to keep pages responsive and test performance before launch. Wix is fully hosted, so the underlying infrastructure is managed by Wix.
