Squarespace Custom CSS and Code

Squarespace customization is code-level work that takes a site beyond what the visual editor and templates allow, using Custom CSS and Code Injection to add custom fonts, animations, schema markup, and third-party embeds. It is how you get a distinctive Squarespace site without leaving the platform, and we are clear from the start about what the platform will and will not let us do.

What it is

What is Squarespace customization?

Squarespace customization is the use of code to push a site past its template defaults, mainly through two built-in tools: the Custom CSS Editor for styling and Code Injection for adding HTML and JavaScript. Together they let you change fonts, layout details, animations, schema markup, and third-party embeds that the standard editor does not expose.

It matters when a template gets you most of the way but not all the way, and you want a site that does not look like every other Squarespace site. Squarespace is a closed platform with no plugins and no server-side code, so customization lives inside real limits, and its older Developer Platform for fully custom templates is 7.0 only and built for agencies. For most sites, Custom CSS and Code Injection cover what you need, and we tell you honestly when a goal is simply not possible on the platform.

Why it matters

Why customize Squarespace with code

Done right, customization makes a Squarespace site feel custom-built while staying easy for your team to manage.

A distinctive site

Your Squarespace site looks like your brand, not a recognizable stock template.

Within the platform

You get custom design without leaving Squarespace's hosting and editor behind.

Maintainable code

Clean, documented CSS and code that the next person can understand and update.

Who this is best for

The right fit

Best fit when

You like Squarespace but your template is holding back your design, you need brand fonts, custom layout, animations, or schema, and you want that done without migrating to another platform.

You might not need this

If your real goal is to rank and get found rather than to restyle the site, custom code alone will not get you there, so start with Squarespace SEO and AI Visibility. And if you need features that require plugins or server-side code, no amount of customization changes that Squarespace cannot do it.

FAQs

Common questions about Squarespace customization

Can you add custom code to Squarespace?

Yes. Squarespace gives you a Custom CSS Editor for styling and Code Injection for HTML and JavaScript, so you can go well beyond the default editor. It does not officially support these modifications, so the code needs to be written carefully to survive platform updates, which is part of what we do.

What can you not do on Squarespace?

You cannot install plugins or run server-side code, because Squarespace is a closed, hosted platform. That rules out anything needing a custom backend or database. We are upfront about these limits before starting, rather than promising something the platform cannot deliver.

Do I need the Squarespace Developer Platform?

Almost certainly not. The Developer Platform is for building fully custom templates from scratch, it only runs on the older 7.0 version, and it is aimed at agencies. For nearly all sites, Custom CSS and Code Injection on 7.1 cover what you need without that complexity.

Will custom code break when Squarespace updates?

It can, if it is written carelessly or relies on undocumented elements. We write code that targets stable selectors and inject it through supported points, and we document everything so it is easy to check and fix after a platform change.

Can you add schema markup to Squarespace?

Yes. We add structured data through Code Injection so search engines and AI tools can understand your pages. This is one of the higher-value customizations, because Squarespace does not add most schema for you and it directly affects how you appear in search and AI answers.

Can you customize a site I already have?

Yes. We work on existing Squarespace sites, whether we built them or not. We review your current code and design, then refine or extend it, and we clean up messy or fragile code we find along the way.
